IN THIS NEW SERIES, WE ASK TAROT SOCIETY READERS TO OFFER INSIGHTS ON ONE CARD.
THIS WEEK: THE FOOL
As the first card of the major arcana, #0, The Fool represents new beginnings, new projects, and especially new adventures. The arc of the major arcana is commonly referred to as “The Fool’s Journey,” eventually ending with The World, a symbol of completion. So when The Fool comes up in a reading, the weight of the majors is usually telling you that there’s an awfully big adventure coming up for the querent. (Or if poorly aspected, that things are stuck in a perpetual beginning.) That is one interpretation, but The Fool is also, y’know, foolish – a sacred idiot, a court jester, He Who Knows Nothing. And my favorite way to read this card is as a marriage of these two ideas: What Buddhists call “The Beginner’s Mind.” The idea is that when we're beginners, everything is new and exciting, and we're open to all potentialities. Some creative people talk about it as treating every project like it's your first. The Beginner’s Mind is a welcoming environment for creative thought. When The Fool comes up in a reading, ask yourself, “Have I let my experiences close my mind?" As with any card, the meaning depends on context. If you're having trouble knowing which interpretation to use, maybe you should try that Beginner’s Mind, no?

"Take my hand, let's have an adventure and free ourselves from constraints." When we join hands with the Fool, we are invited to be free and to break the chains. This is a time of liberation of the mind, body and spirit. In a reading, the Fool represents a need to take action, a long journey, or to expand our boundaries. The Fool is a card of divine energy. Take the time to understand why this card has appeared for you. Do you feel free? What actions do you need to take to achieve freedom? At its lower vibration the Fool brings confusion, irrationality, and chaos.

One of the great unresolved issues in philosophy is the inability to get outside of your own perspective to access “reality.” How can you know if the way you perceive the color red is the same as someone else perception? You can’t – you’re stuck inside your body, with only your own eyes to see with. In that sense, having a physical body from which you cannot escape puts limits on what can perceive. In addition to the physical constraints of being human, we are all products of our upbringing. Societal and cultural norms, in addition to our internalized beliefs about ourselves, all affect us. And so it becomes not only possible, but highly likely, that there is at least one area of our lives where our perception is so far off from reality that we’re actually pretty clueless. This can be an asset or an obstacle, depending on the circumstances.
The Fool is portrayed as a gleeful character oblivious to the world around him. This card is a message for the querent to take a hard look at how they are relating to their outer world. Have they inadvertently created a bad impression? Do they underestimate their good qualities? Are they using conflict to maintain emotional distance? Do they have low self-esteem? Is there something critical they refuse to acknowledge? While it’s important to be true to yourself, there is a way to do so harmoniously, without allowing your choices to become detrimental to yourself or others. Only through accepting our own foolishness do we arrive at our wisdom.
