Danielle Hlatky recently returned to Brooklyn from a month of volunteering at the Moria refugee camp Is Lesbos, Greece, There she helped people from Syria, Iraq and elsewhere who are seeking safety in Europe via Turkey. She learned firsthand the harrowing experiences these people face, both in the war-torn regions they are fleeing and on the dangerous journey to Europe and beyond. Camps such as Moria desperately need support, supplies, and funds to help the thousands of refugees arriving every day. Danielle notes that many of the efforts in Lesbos and other camps are entirely organized and run by DIY, non-NGO affiliated volunteers.
Tonight she will give a talk on her work there, and on the current status and conditions of the refugee crisis, with photos and video. Accounts such as Danielle's are seldom, if ever, heard in the US media, and are more important than ever for us in light of the backlash against refugees in the past month while the crisis grows more dire. Afterward, Danielle will lead a discussion on possible grassroots-driven strategies and initiatives, and how to support ongoing efforts.
This event is also a final push for a fundraising drive started by Danielle to purchase and ship housing supplies to Moria. The first phase of this drive ends on December 16th; with winter coming, the need for shelter in Moria is even more urgent. Here is link for the fundraising drive:
